“The only one stopping you from your dreams is yourself...” Those words often whispered to me as I continued the little tasks along the way in my daily life. Even managed to force itself into my dreams. This time I had just woken up. Those words made me jump out of my bed. I looked over covered in sweat and seen Leon resting peacefully. He has been there all along. It had been a hard week. But we have pulled through.
Today was the worse as we would attend the funeral of Ayumu Uzuki, my father. I often think back to that night.
Leon was smiling, and I remember pulling my fingers through his hair. It was since forever from the last time I remember having him so close. The phone rang making me joke. Leon hid it from me.
Leon: Oh come on, you came back to life, you really want to take this call?
Momo: You’re right Leon, I can always call them back.
I said as I put down the phone
The phone began to ring repeatedly once right after another.
Leon: Geez, who could be calling at this time.
He picked it up and answered.
Leon: Okay, it’s really late now, how important is this.
I heard words on the other line, which seems to be my mothers. In that second as the pouring rain pushed itself against the closed windows. I knew, right then, that something bad had happened.
Mother: Momo you need to come to the hospital.
Momo: Is everything OK?
Mother: It’s your father, they don’t know how much time he has!
I quickly jumped from where I was sitting and ran to change into regular clothes as Leon followed after me with his car keys. We ran hurriedly out of the pounding rain into the car starting the car and gunning it to the hospital.
It was around midnight as we speed walked through the confusing hallways to the waiting room where my mother sat hunched over, head in her hands.
Momo: Mother, what’s going on?
Mother: He wanted to eat. I said no…… but…… he not listen…
She tried her best to say through her think Japanese accent and sobbing tears.
That’s when I heard the machines beeping, almost to a stop, then as if in a movie, on time, the doctors and nurses began sprinting to the room. Pagers when off, and my mother fell to the floor.
I knelt down and hugged her as tears began to fall on me.
That’s when we heard the beeping stop from the heart monitor and turn to a full line of death. Leon came and grabbed us both and hugged us while my mom and I cried into each other’s arms. It seemed as if we sat in the pain and sorrow for hours, but out of the corner of my eye I seen that the doctor was standing there, speechless. A nurse came up and stood silently too.
Doctor: -trying to whisper- They already know.
He stood for a few seconds longer and turned away. That’s when
I knew it was true. My mom lifted her face, and stood up somewhat frail as she was getting older now.
Mother: I would like to see my husband, doctor.
She said as the doctor walked by to go to another room.
I followed close behind and Leon decided to sit.
Mother: Leon, why you no come?
Leon: It’s for close family I let you guys go in there, and I’ll be waiting.
Mother: You are family, you come, he like you, and respect you.
Leon followed after and shortly enough we were in front of the door to his hospital room. Pushing it open hid body lay stiffly and I began crying more. My mom rushed to his side and stood rubbing his forehead as tears were falling from her eyes.
Me: Mother, what happened?
Mother looked up at my surprised that I was even in the room but took a deep sigh.
Mother: Like I said on the phone. He was hungry, and was drunk, and mad
Me: Why mad?
Mother: He has always been mad. Well he went out and because of this pouring rain, got into an accident.
She paused and sat down.
Mother: He was being an idiot! I tried to tell him to calm down, to sleep. But he wouldn’t have it and left. About a mile down the road When you are supposed to turn He forgot and pushed down hard onto the gas, that’s when he slammed into the brick building.
Me: Why was he mad?
I asked curiously looking at the dead body of my father, then back at my mother.
Mother: Because when Yoshiru Long hid the fact that you not dead we hid from government when our citizenship cards expire. Your father was not working anymore, and neither was I, so there was no place for us. When he found out that you were alive, and that we couldn’t get our citizenship cards back, he got mad.
I looked at the corpse, and if I had known from this time as when
yoshiru let me go I would have tried my best to help.
Me: When were you going to be deported?
Mother: Two weeks.
The doctor stopped in holding some damp clothes.
Doctor: I’m sorry ma’am for your loss, and Miss Usuki.
Me and Mother: Thank you
We said in unison as we bowed our heads.
Doctor: Anyways I was looking through the pockets and shirt pocket I found a couple letters.
Mother: A couple letters?
Doctor: yea two
He said holding them up in his fingers. Giving them both to my mother. As she looked at them I can see the writing in English as he’s been trying too hard to write in this language. She passed one to me.
Mother: Only for you to read, this is mine to read.
As I opened it the leaders stood out, something that he has always said. Even at this moment I had heard the words he always says before a match, during school, throughout my whole life.
“The only one stopping you from your dreams is yourself...”
Leon hugged me close making me snap back into reality.
Leon: Let’s get some rest Momo we’re leaving for Japan in a couple days.
Momo: I can’t sleep.
I said as I laid next to him, looking at him.
Leon: I know, how about we just lay down then, you don’t need to get up, just relax.
He said rubbing his hands through my head.
Momo: Then in a couple days I fly to Japan?
Leon: We
Momo: What?
Leon: Then in a couple days WE fly to Japan.
