(The scene opens to the office of "The Evangelist" Jerry Matthews inside Redemption Baptist Church. The scene is a simple one, with Matthews fast asleep in his desk chair, with his long legs resting on his desk. Every few seconds, the rhythm of a rather quiet snore disturbs the otherwise silent scene, and the viewer is left wondering why Matthews, usually so prompt in greeting the PCW viewing audience, is unaware of the camera's presence. Suddenly, the pattern of Matthews' breathing and occasional snore is interrupted by the untimely slam of his office door. Matthews startles awake and finds that he now has company. The camera pans to the door, and beside it stands a tall, slender man with shoulder length blonde hair. The figure is clad in all-white robes that seem to be exuding some type of otherworldly glow. His blue eyes are giving Matthews an ice cold stare, clearly a look of contempt. Once he sees the figure, and realizes exactly who he is, Matthews jumps up from his position of slumber, and rushes over to the man, and immediately drops to his front on both knees, as if he is ashamed that he was caught napping. Finally, the strange man ends the silence by addressing Matthews in a calm, serene tone.)
Figure: Arise, Matthews. You don't submit your person to every fool that walks through this door do you?
(Matthews doesn't get off his knees at first, but eventually, he rises slowly, until he is perfectly upright with his strange visitor.)
Matthews: Brother, you must forgive me for this. You know as well as anyone that I hate to be caught by surprise. I was simply trying to show my apologies for you having to see me fast asleep. I should always be in a state of alertness, ready to pounce on whatever sinful soul I should deem worthy. But, alas, I am only human.
(The strange man thinks about what Matthews has said for a minute, creating a few moments of awkward silence. He strokes his chin in contemplation before speaking again.)
Figure: Granted, I can understand your sense of self-disappointment, but you mustn't beat yourself up. You must save that for your opponents this coming Saturday for Anarchy. Surely, you must know that that is the reason of my visit to you today.
Matthews: Yes, yes, my friend, how could I forget. This Saturday, at Anarchy, is truly the first step of our earthly mission, and the true beginning of the calling that I was sent forth to carry out since the last time you visited me. Prior to Saturday, all of my opponents and matches have been relative, mere tests. But, now, the real work is about to begin.
Figure: I'm glad you realize that the tests that we have placed before you prior to this day have merely been to whet your appetite and to test your mettle to ensure that we didn't make a serious error in selecting you for this work. However, myself and the rest, we are still unsure whether you are indeed the one we seek to fulfill our goals.
(At this thought, Matthews' look on his face of attentiveness immediately turns to one of utter shock and dismay. The usual color in his face begins to drain away, and he begins to become ghastly pale as a result.)
Matthews: Brother, what in God's name do you mean you are still unsure of my mettle and capabilities? I have beaten everyone that PCW management has thrown at me, and I have passed every test that has been set before me. I have doled out beatings to false prophets, punished former pushers of Satan's temptations, and desecrated those who hold themselves higher than our Heavenly Father. How is it that you still doubt my capabilities?
Figure: Surely, you don't think I missed the telecast last week do you? Granted, you came very close to passing that test, but you failed to perform the exorcism on Alice Humes Kennedy, and alas, she was not saved and cannot sit at the Lord's table should she pass away tomorrow. You must understand that as a result of your failure, there is no telling what sorts of eternal damnation she may suffer now as a result. The worst part of all of it is that you let it be interrupted by the 'pusher' who you have "embarrassed" into submission time and time again. If you had done as well as you should have, you should have only had one person to worry about, the woman's pathetic husband. But, you have failed to deal with the Jose Fernandez situation, and have this matter regarding the Platinum Championship far too complicated for our liking.
Matthews: You must understand my thought process on this, friend. Sure, the Jose Fernandez situation is far less than ideal. That, I will grant you. He has has proven to be far more resistant than I had hoped he would be. But, you know as well as anyone that there is no way that he will triumph over me in the end. Ultimately, he will meet his maker, but it has just taken more time than either you or I would've liked. As for Alice Kennedy, I know that I failed to save her last week, but you must understand why Deacon Jeremiah and myself stood pat. I had yet to face Draven Logan Kennedy in the ring, and I wanted to merely gauge his capabilities against the sheep of my flock that accompanied me during the ceremony last week. Yes, he is strong, and his reputation is one that seems to be merited, but without his flunkies like Remi LeBeau or Logan by his side, he cannot and will not pose a threat to me. He has let his own hatred for Adrien Cochrane consume every part of his being, his thoughts, his actions, everything. He is not thinking clearly, his eyes are not on the prize, and as a result, he will fall.
Figure: On that note, I cannot be sure. You, Deacon Jeremiah, and the rest of your flock had him and Fernandez heavily outnumbered last week, and you simply stood by and watched as your faithful fell at your feet. Rather than taking action, you preferred inaction. On your mission, there is precious little time to sit back and watch the grass grow, Matthews. We are fast approaching the end times, and the Antichrist is not going to let you gain a victory so he can gauge your capabilities, you fool!!!
Matthews: Forgive my tone. I know you may not approve of my methodologies or my tactics at all junctures. But, I assure you, you will not be disappointed with my performance at Anarchy. James Baker has no idea how easy he has made my calling. I will be able to strike down all of our enemies at one time, and there will be no need to go outside the rules to achieve victory. Tables, ladders, chairs, bats, chains, you name it. My arsenal to carry out God's work is anything I can find. Surely, you can't think I will fail to achieve my purpose.
Figure: Alas, while you may sound persuasive to the masses, Matthews, your words have no similar effect on me. The ultimate reason for my visit with you here today is simple, I'm here to deliver you an ultimatum. Your tactics have proven to be less than ideal in the past, and some of my brothers feel you may have outstayed your usefulness to us. However, luckily for you, I'm the closest thing you'll ever have to a "guardian angel."
At this thought, the figure lets out a dry, unsettling laugh. The camera pans quickly over to Matthews once again, and the color has yet to run back into his face.
Figure: In order for you to stay on your mission, you have only one choice. Sadly for you, you have run out of room on your leash. You are going to answer to me, and only to me from this point forward. Otherwise, let us just say that your mission may not be the only thing that gets cut short. Is this understood?
(Matthews buries his face in his hands, and lets out a long sigh.)
Matthews: Yes, brother, I understand. If this is the only way I can be guaranteed to continue to be able to carry out my calling, then it is what must be done.
Figure: Good, good. This is going far easier than I thought it would. The one thing that seems to have gotten in your way and impeded your progress in PCW, and on your calling in general, is rather simply, your pride. If you continued on the path you were on, Matthews, you would have devolved into the very thing you have been working against your whole life. You were on the way to becoming the falsest of all false prophets, a priest without a church. But, now that you have so willingly relented, your real spiritual healing can begin.
As you currently are, right there sitting before me, there is no chance that you will emerge victorious on Saturday at Anarchy. Your words may still carry the same persuasions over the masses as they did before, but your deeds are carrying far less weight. You have forgotten your purpose, Matthews. Why you were the one that we approached to take up this calling in the first place. As a result, there is only one way that you can even begin to hope to restore yourself before his eyes.
Matthews: Brother, what must I do?
Figure: It is quite simple really. Surely, you are familiar with the story of our Lord and Savior, are you not?
(Matthews looks up in disbelief at his visitor.)
Matthews: You can't be serious, can you? I have been an ordained minister for nearly fifteen years. Of course I am familiar with the story of Jesus Christ. I have based my entire existence on that story of truth.
Figure: Well, in either case, some may think you have begun to forget it. I'm not referring to the whole story, rather to one particular aspect of his journey that you may be forgetting. I'm speaking of the forty days that Christ spent in the wilderness facing temptations of power, glory, being freed from starvation and others from the red devil himself. Even Christ himself had to subject himself to the face of adversity before he was truly prepared to give his life in order to save humanity from the burden of original sin. In order for you to rise and take your true place as God's divine enforcer here on earth, you will walk the way that he walked, in the very same manner. You will not eat, you will not drink, you will use no means of motorized transportation, and most importantly of all, you will not surrender yourself to the temptation to do so.
Matthews: Brother, how do you propose that I accomplish this? This is not like Christ's time, the world is much more developed now than it ever was. And on top of that, how do you expect me to be able to make it to Anarchy on time in order to pass what you and I can agree is my ultimate test?
Figure: This is so, but your doubt even after you have accepted the ultimatum continues to frustrate me, Matthews. This is the only way you can redeem yourself in the Father's eyes, and the only way you can even begin to unlock your full potential and achieve your greatest victory and pass the ultimate test. But, I suggest that you prepare yourself. Let's just say that your journey is much more imminent than you may realize.
(With this, yet another look of confusion comes across Matthews' face. His visitor flashes a sly smile across his face and snaps his fingers as a dull click echoes through Matthews' office. Shortly following this, a cloud of smoke fills the room, leaving the room in a haze. When the smoke clears, Matthews is nowhere to be found, and the stranger begins to laugh menacingly as the scene fades.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(The scene is picked up once again in a forest clearing. The area is rather lightly wooded, with the occasional pine tree popping up out of the brush. Under one of these trees sits a figure wearing tattered clothes. He is sitting with his back against the tree, and his head is down in slumber. The figure is startled awake by the howling of a wolf, and we see that Matthews' journey in the wilderness has begun. Matthews gets up from his seated position and cracks his back. He closes his eye, utters a brief prayer, and opens them again. He begins to walk towards the far side of the clearing.)
(He walks through the lightly forested area for around six hours. As the sun in the sky begins to set along the horizon, Matthews notices a break in the tree line, and he begins to hear what seems to be the rapid passing of air and metal vibrations that could only accompany the sounds of cars driving along a highway. Matthews lets out a shout of exuberance as he begins to run towards the sound. As he nears the break in the tree line, he realizes that his hunch was correct. He peers out at the black top of a two lane rural highway as cars pass, the drivers staring at the newly emerged traveler with interest. Having reached a highway, Matthews begins to walk along the shoulder, needing to make his way to the arena for PCW Anarchy as he begins his journey for redemption through the wilderness as the scene fades to black.)
Figure: Arise, Matthews. You don't submit your person to every fool that walks through this door do you?
(Matthews doesn't get off his knees at first, but eventually, he rises slowly, until he is perfectly upright with his strange visitor.)
