OOC: I have to admit that I took so long to write this and had to write it with a couple different computers and on my iphone at one points, so I apologize for mistakes and I also apologize that I didn't get much of a chance to read Adrien's r/p before writing my own. Alas, I hope that people understand my references to the "dream sequence" in the beginning because I worked hard to put this one together. Enjoy. Also I am going to go back through and fix coloring when I get home from my other job tonight.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At the Pay per view Heather Monroe had done something that no one expected. She defeated Danielle Lopez and then went on to become the World Heavyweight Champion after being thrown into a hell in a cell match at the last minute as a replacement for the former champion Michael Morrison. Since then there had been many reaction towards Heather being the champion. They were half and half. There were some that said "it was about time" including Heather herself. Then there were others that didn't give Heather any credit at all. Claiming that she didn't deserve the championship or even the shot for it. However the fact that Heather won the championship at all in that situation said it all. She had defeated three of the best wrestlers that PCW had to offer in a situation that she wasn't even remotely prepared for. However bitterness and jealousy runs deep when things take an unexpected turn.
The funny thing about those that still believed Heather to be undeserving was the pure and simple fact that she did in fact deserve to hold the championship. The fact of the matter was that Heather had worked very hard to get into the Heavyweight title picture. She had won more Scars wrestling cups than anyone else. She was a hall of famer, a former broadcast and tag team champion. So what exactly was it that made people still believe that Heather hadn't made it in PCW. That she didn't deserve the top title in the company? Heather had a couple different theories on the matter. The first was obvious, she was a woman. Many men were scared of powerful women, women that could take their jobs and do it better than them. Of course in PCW those scared men were few and far between so Heather didn't believe that was the case, or rather she hoped it wasn't the case.
The second theory was that it was because Heather had already accomplished a lot. It's like how people hated Notre Dame back in the day because they won so much. Heather wouldn't really compare it to that level, but high school girl speak dictates that if someone is more successful than you then you must dislike them on principle. Heather certainly didn't win every time she stepped into the ring and her title reigns, aside from her two stints as broadcast champion had been far from one another. So how could people possibly go against her because of that? Or maybe it had nothing to do with that and people just simply didn't like Heather. That would be surprising to her, after all what had she done besides her job? She went out into the ring whenever she was asked and she worked her ass off. Just because she didn't talk about it a lot or beg fans for attention didn't mean she didn't love what she did. In fact you could look back at her career and tell that she had dedicated her whole life thus far to what she had now become.
People called it luck, but Heather called in passion. She was sick of people underestimating her even after she had won the damn World Heavyweight Championship. She had definitely embraced the fact that she had been an underdog in the beginning of her career, but that title should have been shed when she started winning more and more. It should have been shed when she became apart of the Elite and it definitely should have been shed when she gained the World Heavyweight championship. Yet here she stood browsing blogs that deemed her unfit to be champion, boosted Adrien Cochrane to be the next and 'much more deserving' champion. That would be her downfall though wouldn't it? She knew better than to read what was out there on the internet, but she was too young and she was born and brought up in the digital age, it was apart of who she was and who she would continue to be. Heather was quick to forgive someone inside of the ring and in the business where it was her job to either win or lose. Outside of it though it was hard to forgive and forget. The idea of people not having faith in her was getting to her.
Not in a way that she was starting to lose faith in herself and who she was or what she did as a wrestler, but it certainly made her question what she had to do to be on that level that she already thought she was on yet so many claimed she had never even touched.
Heather's heart pounded nearly out of her chest as her feet quickly hit the ground one after the other splashing through the puddles that had been created by never-ending rain. She had been running for what seemed like days, yet her breath knew better than to leave her in her time of need. The sound of sirens and dogs had left her, and even though she felt like she was home free something inside of her told her to keep running. Don't stop.
WEEKS EARLIER
"Monroe, I'm sorry, but I can't keep doing this. The city is running wild and they are blaming you."
Heather stood in front of her commander, the man that she had been helping save the city with. She looked at him from behind the mask she wore to conceal her identity.
"The Elite are getting to a point where they are making this city more and more terrified of the consequences of you not showing your identity. PCW as we know it could be completely dead if you don't reveal who you are."
"I understand the consequences commander. I know what I have to do. I'll do it at the District Attorney meeting tomorrow, Adrien is holding it to do something about The Elite. I'll do what needs to be done."
The commander nodded his head, he wasn't exactly pleased that it had come to this. After all Monroe had saved the city too many times to count, and now that city was turning against her. But they both knew this is what needed to be done.
THE NEXT DAY
The press conference had been set up. The man that had given the city hope once again, Adrien Cochrane stood to the side, speaking with his team as they watched reporters file in. It had been planned for him to make a speech regarding the state of PCW and how the Elite and their crazy jokers of henchmen would be taken care of. Heather Monroe stood along the wall looking out among the crowd, preparing herself for her announcement. Adrien then makes his way to the podium as whispers in the crowd quiet down.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press I have gathered you all here today because I want to say something about these recent attacks and threats of attacks to do with The Elite." He takes a deep breath. "We cannot give into this threats. We cannot give these terrorists everything that they want. We must fight against them, in a civil manor."
"Give them Monroe!"
On crowd member shouts out.
"That's all they want, so give them what they want and there will be no more dead cops."
The scream again. This prompted Heather to move forward, perfectly prepared to give herself up.
"Well then you can have Monroe. I am Monroe."
Gasps of shock float through the crowd. Voices whispering questions filled with wonder and confusion. Heather nearly fell over, feeling the false confession hit her like a ton of bricks. It wasn't long before Adrien had handcuffs on his wrists and he was being dragged off the makeshift stage. Heather lost her voice, unable even to speak to herself.
THE NEXT WEEK
A lot had happened in the falling out of Adrien announcing himself as the Monroe. The Elite had predictably broken into the SWAT van being used to transport him, taken him from it and moved him to a new location. That location ended up having a lot of gasoline and fire involved. In the process of trying to get loose from the chains his hands were wrapped in Adrien made it worse for himself and fell eventually leading to the burning of half of his face. Monroe and the police got there only seconds too late and were able to save Adrien. He now sat in the hospital, half of his face burned off from the gasoline. Heather Monroe stood there, looking down at the face that she is faulted for helping create. She swallows hard as the thought crosses her mind that this could all be her fault. She turns to leave only to feel the warmth of a hand on her arm, Adrien's.
"Why are you here?"
Adrien asked in what little voice he still had. Heather turned back to him, hardly able to contain her emotions upon seeing his burnt face.
"I came to make sure you were okay."
"Do I LOOK okay?"
Adrien spoke in a harsh tone. It made Heather want to turn away.
"Look at me! Look what has happened to me. I know what they're calling me too. I know that they're calling me "Two-faced Cochrane". Don't act like you're here out of sympathy rather than guilt."
"Adrien, I don't know what you're talking about."
Heather felt her cheeks burn as she let the lie out of her mouth. Adrien knew the truth though.
"Don't patronize me Heather. I know the truth about you. I know this is your fault. Now I have to live with this, with your mistakes. You're no hero."
Adrien's words stung. Heather couldn't say anything, she was void of words.
"Get out!"
"Adrien...I'm sor..."
"GET OUT!"
He screamed. Heather didn't try much harder, the truth was she believed what he said, this was her fault. She had failed. So she left, thinking that would be the last she would hear of Adrien Cochrane. It of course wouldn't be because the next week she found herself standing in front of him once again. This time he looked much different, he wore a half tore suit and held a nearly hunched over stand. He held a gun to the head of the commissioner's son who cried for help. Adrien was crazy, nearly matching that of the insanity that the Elite had.
"Stop Adrien! You're better than this."
Heather spoke out in an attempt to reason. Reason, however, was lost on a soul as scarred as his.
"What's the point? This can't be fixed!"
He pointed to his face with the gun before pointing it back at the head of the young boy.
"Exactly! It can't be fixed so what are you doing?"
"He deserves to suffer, like I did. He was protecting you."
Heather shook her head and before she could even get out another thought a bullet was flying her way out of Adrien's gun. He had become something different, a monster. Not just in his face, but in his nature as well. Heather fell back and landed hard on the ground.
"You could have stopped it all, and now I'm going to make you suffer."
Adrien stepped forward towards the commissioner, still holding tight onto his son. Adrien pushes the boy forward, holding the gun to the back of his head as he cried. Heather then shot up and grabbed a hold of Adrien, tackling him over the platform where they once stood. Adrien falls to the ground, Heather holds herself up on the platform by one hand. She then lets herself fall, landing much easier than Adrien, who lies motionless next to her.
"He was supposed to be good. He was supposed to be the hero that this town needed. The Elite they won, they corrupted him."
Heather laments. The commissioner shakes his head.
"The role of hero doesn't suit everyone Monroe, it can only be done by the strong at heart. Those like you. Adrien wanted the responsibility but when the going got tough he couldn't handle the responsibility that came with it."
"The city still thinks that I'm in the wrong. That I did this to their city."
"Let them think you're bad, undeserving of the praise. Let them think that Adrien Cochrane could have bee their savior. In the end you know in your heart that you were meant for this role, that you are the true hero and let that be enough. You have to be strong now for yourself because that's the only way you can continue to be strong for this city. They need you Monroe. They need a hero."
The sound of police sirens are heard in the distance. Heather's neck jerked towards the sound.
"Go. I'll do what needs to be done. You do your part."
Heather was hesitant to leave but she did at the urging of the commissioner. Her part was to protect the city, and she would. She ran as fast as she could her heart beating harder than ever. She would be...
A silent guardian. A watchful protector. A dark knight.
Heather's eyes popped open as the sounds of The Dark Knight credits rolling drowned out the silence of the night. She had decided to have a batman marathon in preparation for the release of the newest addition The Dark Knight Rises. She of course hadn't made it to the final movie before falling asleep. She sat up on her couch letting out a deep breath. The all too realistic dreams that took place before an important match would always take her breath away.
"Did you even manage to catch any of the film?"
Heather's sister Chelsea joked as she walked into the living room, passing into the kitchen. Heather was still a little off balance from her impromptu nap.
"I had the weirdest dream, it mirrored the movie. I was batman and Adrien was Harvey Dent. It makes no sense."
Heather shook her head and her sister made her way over to the couch.
"It actually makes some sense. Dent was trying to overthrow the need for Batman by taking care of business on the streets by himself. He didn't think Batman was exactly needed despite the fact that he spoke highly of Batman at points. Batman on the other hand just always wanted what was best for Gotham. Always wanted to do good and give the city what they want and need. That's like you with your fans. Adrien is trying to overthrow you in a way."
Chelsea shrugged her shoulders as if she hadn't just explained most of what the dream meant.
"Yeah, that sounds about right. It's weird though in the end, I don't think Adrien could be evil."
"We're humans, Heather, everyone can turn evil when they want something enough."
Chelsea nodded her head in a matter-of-fact way.
"You always think too much about your matches. You need to relax."
"Any other match I would agree, but this is my first title defense of the biggest title the company has. I think that thinking too much is needed."
Heather nodded her head.
"In fact, I'm going to talk about it right now, because I won't be able to get it off of my mind otherwise."
With that Heather headed to her usual spot at her computer, popping up the top and turning on the webcam as she had so many times before. This one felt different though, this one meant more to her. As the scene opened up we see nothing but a semi-dark room and Heather's computer screen illuminated face.
"This match that is coming up, it's a big one."
Heather laughed at her soft explanation.
"Okay, lets be honest it's huge. In fact I would say that it's probably the biggest match of my career thus far. Some would say that would be the Hell in a Cell match. The one that certainly is in the top three of most important matches in my career. However in my opinion a champion cannot be judged off of winning the title but rather defending the title. A real champion stays a champion and that's why this match means so much to me and why I consider it to be one of my biggest to date. It is not going to be an easy match by any means. In fact I would say that Adrien will be one of my more fierce competitors. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Adrien. He is definitely going to be one of the toughest challenges that I will face in this business all together. Mainly because he is hungry. Hungry for an opportunity like the one that is in front of him. Hungry for the chance to be on top of the world. Hungry for the business and all it has to offer. He reminds me of myself in that sense and I also think that's what intrigues me the most about this match."
"See Adrien and I are the same in the sense that we both want what is best for this company, we want this company to grow and we want to see ourselves grow within the company. We respect those that want the same things as us and we love the business in general. The differences between Adrien and I have a lot to do with what we really fight for though. I personally fight for women everywhere. I want to make a difference in how women are seen both in the wrestling world and outside of it. I want little girls to have a role model to look up to in an industry that has for so long pegged women as only objects used for pillow fights and bra and panties matches. I know that Adrien cares about his fans but the way I care for them is by giving them all of my love and attention all of the credit for who I am now. I know I would be no where without their constant support and belief in me."
"Another thing that separates Adrien and myself this time around is what we want out of this match. Adrien has made it obvious that he wants to take his career to the next step and I get that. He wants to prove that he is as good as so many people say he is and he wants to hold the championship that people are saying he deserves. I want to gain something different out of this match. I have already reached the level Adrien wants, in fact I fought very hard to get there before this time around in PCW. What I want from this match is to remind myself and those around me that I won this title for a reason, I deserve to be the World Heavyweight Champion. Luck didn't hand me that championship, I won that championship in a hard match to win. People write me off because I wasn't originally in the match, but guess what I did something harder than being scheduled. I stepped in at the last minute and won. It wasn't luck that brought that title to me, it was hard work. I want people to see that. That's all I've really fought for though."
Heather shrugged her shoulders.
"I will always have to fight for that. For people to recognize me at the level that I'm playing at. There are still so many people that don't even want to say that I did anything this year, yet this is my biggest year to date in PCW or in this business in general. I still have a huge future ahead of me. I plan on winning this match and I know in my heart that's what should happen. I worked for way too long and worked way too hard to let this championship run through my fingers in the first defense. It's not the champion that I am and it definitely isn't the type of champion I want to be. The type of champion I want to be is one that takes pride in the championship that I hold, not one that uses it to validate who she is. That's the hole I've fallen in lately, I've felt the need to use my accomplishments to validate myself, and make people realize that I can do what I say I can do. However I've come to the sad realization that it doesn't matter what I do, how successful I am, there will always be someone that thinks you can't do something. So it's time for me to grow past the want to people please, the want to make people notice my abilities and potential."
"I need to leave all of that behind and focus on what I truly want and need. Right now, I need to win this match and I want to remain the world heavyweight champion. Not because I think Adrien would be a poor champion, in fact he would probably be a very suitable champion. I want to continue being the champion because I want to let PCW know that I can pull off the feat that its handed to me, that I am capable of pushing myself to new limits because of this opportunity. Because I appreciate what they see in me and I will never let them down as long as I have a say it my future. Right now my future reads "still PCW World heavyweight champion". Believe it."
Heather let out a deep breath before the scene faded.
