(OOC: Sorry for the poor effort friends. Life has been rather hectic of late.)
The Premium Five said that his stock had never been as high. Fresh off of his first main event victory in his career, putting his winning streak at 10, having been undefeated since Wrestle Extravaganza III. Yet, for all of the success, and all of the records that his Platinum Championship reign has set, the good Reverend couldn’t help but feel an impending sense of dread or doom. His visions had gotten worse on a daily basis, and it seemed that the Father had turned a deaf ear for whatever reasons to his servant’s prayers.
These are far from ideal circumstances heading into yet another encounter with Ryan “The Reaper” Robinson. The very man who has spent all of 2013 as the bane of the preacher man’s existence. Despite the success at Battle Finale, this matchup just seemed different. Even though he knew every move his opponent could make. Despite surviving the fury caused by months of assaults on his family, friends, and closest of associates. Even Danielle Lopez herself didn’t seem safe anymore. But, that didn’t help to explain the silence, or the sense of foreboding.
The scene opens up to the pastoral offices of Birmingham First Baptist Church. “The Evangelist” Jerry Matthews is seated alone in his office, and the room is dark except for a single white spotlight illuminating the figure of the pastor. He is wearing a white cotton suit, and he has his facial mask on. The PCW Platinum Championship sits at his right elbow.
Jerry Matthews: Brothers and sisters of the faithful, for whatever reason, I can’t help but feel unsettled at the thought of stepping into a steel cage with Ryan “The Reaper” Robinson in a few short days. But, let me dispel any fear that you have that I have lost my gumption. I am not afraid of Reaper. I’ve decimated him on a countless number of occasions. I ripped his sister and his cousin limb from limb, enacted revenge on Aurora Rose for attempting to burn me alive for simply trying to save her soul from eternal hellfire, and even left a nice dent in the ever vulnerable armor of “The Lethal Latina” Danielle Lopez herself.
I’ve buried Hall of Famers alive. I’ve taken on all comers as the Platinum Champion for over six months, avenging the only defeat I’d taken since I took the belt at Struggle for Power. No one has been able to match me in the ring. I was unstoppable, the number of blessings God had showered me with had never been at a higher level. No title reign in PCW history was longer without a hiatus. But, now, things have changed with only one plausible explanation. I fear that the Father may have forsaken me.
A tear falls from the preacher’s right eye.
Jerry Matthews: The visions of betrayal, the overly encumbering sense of dread I find myself plagued with, and the ongoing white noise I continue to sense as my prayers go unanswered. It has been awhile since I have had a meaningful conversation with the Most High or any of his servants for that matter. This is why I am uneasy. What fate is his plan for me about to reveal? After Robinson, what happens next? These are questions I keep needing answers for. I must regain his attention, and the only way is to step into the steel cage with Reaper at Slamathon. Prove that I am worthy of his love. To once again strap on my armor and head into the trenches against sin. Only then can I even think to hope that my ministry will have any success.
Reaper, the time for talk has passed. You know me, and I know you. We have fought many battles in this endless war by now. At Slamathon, only one of us will walk out of that steel cage. And, even without God in my corner, you’ll find me a more than capable adversary. The Word of the Lord, Thanks Be to God.
Matthews lowers his head for a moment of prayer. Once his prayer has ended, he crosses himself. He gives a glance towards his championship belt. He rises, grabs the belt, and exits the office as the scene fades to black.
